ONE PLANET. JOINING HANDS

EUROMEDITERRANEA 2026

Euromediterranea is the Fondazione Alexander Langer Stiftung's main annual event: a moment of dialogue on the themes that shaped Alexander Langer's thought and action — peace, ecological justice, human rights, and intercultural encounter. The event is closely linked to the International Alexander Langer Prize and its award ceremony.

One Planet. Joining Hands, this year's edition, is dedicated to climate justice and peacebuilding. At the centre of the stage is François Kamate Kasereka, winner of the 2026 International Alexander Langer Prize: a young Congolese activist from North Kivu who, through the power of nonviolence, fights to protect Virunga National Park, against resource exploitation, and for a just ecological transition. In North Kivu, the entanglement of armed groups, resource extraction, and climate crisis is dramatically tangible: in this context, environmental activism reveals itself as a plural form of peacebuilding, since the climate crisis acts as a conflict multiplier, while peace is an indispensable condition for any effective climate policy.

Like Alexander Langer, Kamate rejects the logic of extractivism and works towards an ecologically sound and socially desirable transformation, rooted in local dialogue and global responsibility. Euromediterranea 2026 invites us to reflect on this challenge: conceiving peace and climate justice as two sides of the same coin.
