Short description of the PEACEWORKERS Course

The course for peaceworkers was conceived and organised by the Department for Professional Training of the Autonomous Province of South Tyrol, Italy, in collaboration with the Free University of Bolzano, the Alexander Langer Foundation, Bolzano; the Civilian Defence Research Center, Rome; Fields, Rome; Avventura Urbana, Turin, and with the participation of the Alpini Division of the Italian Army. The course is supported by the Italian Ministry of External Affairs and the Italian Ministry of Defence.

Peaceworkers are trained to work in the context of civilian interventions/peace operations with the aim of promoting peace through conflict prevention and transformation. Such conflicts may be interpersonal, local or international in character. She/he is a humanitarian operator whose intercultural and communication skills enable her/him to intervene in critical situations in order to decrease tension and promote dialogue.

The course takes place in Bolzano, Italy, between October 2003 and September 2004. It has a duration of 800 hours and is taught in English and Italian. It is composed of five main topic areas: promotion of peace, intercultural cooperation, conflict transformation, management of humanitarian and emergency aid, international law. The program includes a 5 week internship abroad. The proposal for a 2nd edition of the course in 2004/2005 was already presented.
