ALEXANDER LANGER AWARDS 1997 – 2009

Exposition Mostra Ausstellung 26 June – 5 July 2009

Ex-Museion, University Entry from Via Sernesi, Bolzano/Bozen (Italy)

The exposition oft he „Alexander Langer Award“ is a hommage to the 10th anniversary oft he Foundation. The first Langer Award was first given in 1997 to Khalida Messaoudi for her courage and effort concerning civil and women’s rights in Algeria. The handling out of the price throws a spot on this woman we can see clearly, on her country and on the circumstances she has to face living there. This spot light has been switched on for 13 times up to now and enlighted different parts of the world. The exposition should put into remembrance why these people were hommaged and therefor we, the makers of the exposition collected everything helpful to accentuate the profile of the award winners. The exposition is at the same time an archive the visitors can access. In little hanging boxes you find texts, books and newspaper articles concerning the award winner. You can choose either between reading through all these informations or you can simply have a look at the drawn faces and read the short texts on the boards next to them.

Each award winner has an incredible story to tell which gives us insight into the situation of a country, politics and culture. It is primarily the story of people who fought for peace, freedom, environment and human rights. The particularity of these people lies in the fact that they did not work for organizations when they did their good deads but for personal conviction or personal history. Afterwards some of them established organizations. Like Gabriele Bortolozzo, who worked in close contact with chemicals in Porto Marghera, who fought against the use of substances causing cancerous diseases, or Maana Suldan, who opened her home to all the women and children fleeing the war in Somalia and then opened a whole village where all of them can live, or more recently, the Chinese couple Ding Zilin and Jang Peikun, whose son was killed 20 years ago during the massacre on the Tiennanmen Place, who fight against oblivion.

They all could have been Alexander Langer’s friends. There is an area dedicated to him, to his archive papers, thoughts, sentences and opinions, too.

ALEXANDER LANGER AWARDS 1997 – 2009

Exhibition Mostra Ausstellung 26 June – 5 July 2009

Ex-Museion, University Entry from Via Sernesi, Bolzano/Bozen (Italy)
